Reflections on mission and purpose

Read LUKE 4: 18-21

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,

because he has anointed me

to proclaim good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

and recovery of sight for the blind,

to set the oppressed free, 19

to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” 20

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

CONSIDER THESE QUESTIONS

1) Of all the prophecies in scripture about the Messiah (king and leader, will suffer, etc), Jesus chooses this passage as his inaugural address to his home town. Why do you think that is? Why is this passage important to him?

2) As a follower of Jesus, what does it look like for you to continue to carry out his mission of proclaiming good news to the poor and freedom for prisoners?

CLOSING PRAYER

Jesus, open my heart and teach me to what it means to fully be a part of the mission of your kingdom on this earth. Show me how I can be a part of your purposes for the sake of your glory.
