Often times, people hear about God’s love and mercy and they’re excited. They say, “Yes! That’s what I want.” But then, their faith fizzles out after awhile. We might look around and wonder why some people seem to have a faith that carries them through trials, while others seem to be blown about by the winds of the storm.

Remember last week how we talked about spending time with God? Well, we're going to go there again in this week's devotional. Every month, I set a day in my calendar to spend with God in silence and solitude. I live in Salt Lake City, UT where I am within 20 minutes of hundreds of spectacular trailheads into the mountains so I have plenty of options to get away with God.

The summer can provide a refreshing change of pace as a college student. You don’t have an 8 AM class to get up for, chapter meetings and events to plan or attend, or busy schedules to manage.

Trials, challenges, hard times, suffering, grief - whatever it’s been for you recently, it's hard enough as it is. Combine that with trying to have the “right Christian attitude” about it, ugh.

The past couple of years I have been facinated with movies and tv shows about fighting. I LOVED the movie "Creed"- the illegitimate son, Adonis, of legendary boxer, Apollo Creed, who follows in his father's footsteps and boxes a world champion. It has everything I love- a good underdog story, training montages, action and excitement, a love story, and best of all: Michael B. Jordan. I'm also into the Netflix series, "Glow"- a show about a group of rag-tag actresses who find themselves on a women's wrestling show. Women who kick butt- yep that's awesome.

Do all the things! That’s how we often approach life - balancing classes, internships, being on a million exec. teams, hanging out with friends, and finding time to do laundry.

The summer after my junior year of college, I interned with a lifestyle magazine. My internship gave me opportunities to write. I also got to attend art gallery openings, clubs and other events around town that wanted press. It was what I thought I wanted to do.

In the midst of college, it's easy to become distracted. From chapter meetings, to class, to work, we find ourselves just trying to survive, rather than thrive. The reality is, we lose our purpose.

The human brain is incredible.

I bet you didn't think that would be the first sentence of the first summer devotional. And maybe you're hating me a little bit right now because you'd rather be thinking about the beach than neuroscience. But bare with me.

2017. It's Saturday of Easter weekend. One year ago. It seemed like such a peaceful day. My housemate was moving into our new house and as I waited for her to arrive, I watched my new street and dreamed about opportunities we would have. I never expected what would happen next.

Holy Saturday marks the day after the crucifixion and the day before the Resurrection. Saturday was the Sabbath in this culture, the day of rest, the day each week when no one was permitted to work. Everyone is in their homes. No one is at Jesus’ tomb.

I grew up in a traditional Methodist church. We recognized Advent, Lent, Easter and everything in between. But if you asked me if I understood why we observed Easter the way we did, I would have no idea. Words like "atonement", "sacrificial lamb", and “Good Friday” went over my head.

A year ago my life was turned upside down when some people in my life made choices that profoundly wounded my soul in a way I had never experienced before. I tried all the "bullet points" of forgiveness I had learned in the past.

1. Why did you go Greek?

I went Greek because of the endless opportunities that the Greek organizations offer.  ΣΛΓ are known to be Women of Distinction.

Ok, I’m going to tell you one of my really embarrassing stories.

During my first week as a freshman at the University of Illinois, one of my high school friends drunk dialed me. I called her back the next day and said “I’m really disappointed that you got drunk. I thought you were better than that.”

“The kindest thing you can ever say is no.”

The first time I heard that, I laughed. I hate saying no.

So instead I say yes to everything. But when I say yes to everything, my insincere "yes" robs me of integrity. Let me explain.

Well, the time has come. Summer break is over and school has started again (unless you're a quarter school, which means you have another few weeks). For many of you, today is your first day back to classes.

This weekend, we saw the latest string in public protests from White Supremisists and Neo-Natzis- this time in Charlottesville, VA, the home of the University of Virginia.

When you’re in college, typically summer goes one of two ways. You either are super busy with a summer internship or summer job, doing fun things on the weekend, and lucky if you make it to church on Sunday.

This summer has been the hotest on record in Salt Lake City. With no AC and no end in sight to the +100° days, complaining about the heat to my cat while I slowly melt into the fabrics of my couch has become the norm. But complaining is like eating too much candy- at first it tastes so good but then after awhile you just feel terrible and sick.
